Poco a poco se produce un cambio sustancial en Andrés, que de perdedor pasa a sentirse ganador, en una metáfora del país que asimila la derrota y acepta, con pasividad, una victoria que no es la suya.
A pesar de vivir lejos de sus padres, en un clima de miedo palpable, el tiempo en la masía está lleno de sentimientos y descubrimientos: el misterioso mundo de los adultos, la intuición detrás de las palabras de los mayores, los primeros pasos en las sendas del sexo. Es también un tiempo de amistades valientes, de cuentos explicados a la vera del fuego, de juegos al aire libre, de pan con vino y azúcar… de pan negro.
En tiempos difíciles los sentimientos se encienden porque no hay casi nada que perder. El amor, el odio, la pasión, el rencor, la venganza, la hipocresía, la humillación... cobran fuerza en la vida de los personajes de esta obra magistral, en la que Emili Teixidor recrea el ambiente rural de la Cataluña de posguerra en una lengua vivísima y con un espléndido dominio de la tensión narrativa.
